Type Faces - Badges!

I thought it might be good idea to produce some pin badges with my Typeface faces on them. They make for desirable little objects.

Type Face Badge Templates

As suggested in my crit, and as I think these faces suggest, I'm going to make a selection into badges. I think these could be desirable, even collectable for graphic designers. They could collect their favourite typefaces' type face.

Type Face Gift Card Mocks

As this brief was only supposed to be a simple screen printing exercise but I am really digging it so i've made some greetings cards with each type face on them as a possible gift for discerning designers and type fanatics. They are only simple mock ups but I foiled the laser print to add another dimension. I made sure I used black foil so if there were any gaps the black ink wouldn't make them too obvious.
The range of this brief could easily blow up into a very substantial brief but I need to resolve my club promo and live briefs before I do anything else on this brief. I am thinking that I might re-approach this brief when thinking about my FMP briefs. For now, here are some photos...

Type Faces Screen Print

Designed and printed in under 24hrs! Such a fun little brief. I said in a previous post that I wanted to use this brief to try and achieve a super crisp print and I did exactly that. Whoop! These photographs really don't do the colour of the ink justice - it's a really nice turquoise blue, these shots are missing that special subtle hint of green that makes the print pop off the paper.
I ended up printing an edition of 10 prints on really nice 280 gsm print paper with the intention of selling them at mine, Jonny, Charlotte, Vicky and Ed's stall at Leeds Book Fair. Very happy with how these turned out!
When I had printed an edition of 10 i decided to experiment with the screen printing process. Disobeying all printing etiquette, I slopped onto the screen all of my left over ink from my Daily Mash prints, Jackson Pollock stylee (you'd never get away with that behavior down in the Vernon Street print room!). A good little experiment, it created a marble effect on the print.
My favourite of the 'marble' prints. I like the fact the bottom left corner is missing and the psychedelic oil type mark left in the bottom right. An interesting experiment indeed but I prefer the solid turquoise prints to the marble as the single colour pops off of the page.

Show & Tell / Feedback

Hello. We had our show & tell session this morning. I rather enjoyed it. It made a good change to the normal crit format - the fact we had the entire morning to mooch about looking at peoples work and give feedback was a healthy process. It was good to see the class' work as a whole rather than the select few in your own crit. There are some really interesting and promising things being produced.

As for my work, I got some good feedback. People preferred my new Daily Mash visual direction, as do I. The addition of the imagery adds interest to the posters through their composition and will do the same to the Spotify and press ads once I re-design them. Comments said that the added imagery brings humour to the composition and the 'haphazard' approach suits the content - much like the punk zines I've been looking at for context.
The Daily mash scrapbook also went down really well with one person saying 'you avoided letting the story take prominence over the design, well done'. The collaboration work between me and Jonny got some very nice remarks too. This is good because we aim to collaborate for an FMP project.

Possibly the best thing to come from the show & tell were the remarks about my quick turnaround Type Faces brief. Everyone seemed to really like it and thought it was brilliant because it is so simple and 'clever'. Not bad for a small brief I thought up and designed yesterday lunch time! People have suggested that I turn it into a range of notebooks, badges, t-shirts or a game. Maybe even a promotional tool for a type foundry?!
One of the best comments about the Type Faces brief was that it was an 'Ollie' brief, and to a certain extent I feel I've moved away or lost track on these kind of fun briefs I love to do. My work seems to have become far more serious in the third year, often using photography rather than illustration or creative type. I'm not sure what's happened? Perhaps I thought I had to grow up in the third year? Looking toward FMP I think I'd like to get back to the fun stuff. I will definitely think back to this when writing briefs for FMP. Whoever wrote that note, thanks for reminding me :)

Type Faces Screen Print

Whilst Looking through my Font Book last night it occurred to me quite how full of character a typeface could be. Some are very individual, some are very similar with similar families. This gave me an idea for a quick turn around screen printed poster. The concept being to showcase the character of a group of selected typefaces through displaying them as emoticons; the typographic design and form adding character and personality to each typeface.
Whist screen printing my Daily Mash posters the other night one of my screens developed a split in it and lost tension so it was useless for printing. Having only used one of the two negatives on the screen I was pretty annoyed that I would have to strip, coat and expose another screen (as we all know a time consuming process). Now, on the other hand, I am happy because I can put the negative of this one colour screen print on the new screen (two A2 negatives on the A1 screen). Bingo!
I am going to use this short brief to try and achieve the crispest screen print I possibly can. Practice make perfect!
