Show & Tell / Feedback

Hello. We had our show & tell session this morning. I rather enjoyed it. It made a good change to the normal crit format - the fact we had the entire morning to mooch about looking at peoples work and give feedback was a healthy process. It was good to see the class' work as a whole rather than the select few in your own crit. There are some really interesting and promising things being produced.

As for my work, I got some good feedback. People preferred my new Daily Mash visual direction, as do I. The addition of the imagery adds interest to the posters through their composition and will do the same to the Spotify and press ads once I re-design them. Comments said that the added imagery brings humour to the composition and the 'haphazard' approach suits the content - much like the punk zines I've been looking at for context.
The Daily mash scrapbook also went down really well with one person saying 'you avoided letting the story take prominence over the design, well done'. The collaboration work between me and Jonny got some very nice remarks too. This is good because we aim to collaborate for an FMP project.

Possibly the best thing to come from the show & tell were the remarks about my quick turnaround Type Faces brief. Everyone seemed to really like it and thought it was brilliant because it is so simple and 'clever'. Not bad for a small brief I thought up and designed yesterday lunch time! People have suggested that I turn it into a range of notebooks, badges, t-shirts or a game. Maybe even a promotional tool for a type foundry?!
One of the best comments about the Type Faces brief was that it was an 'Ollie' brief, and to a certain extent I feel I've moved away or lost track on these kind of fun briefs I love to do. My work seems to have become far more serious in the third year, often using photography rather than illustration or creative type. I'm not sure what's happened? Perhaps I thought I had to grow up in the third year? Looking toward FMP I think I'd like to get back to the fun stuff. I will definitely think back to this when writing briefs for FMP. Whoever wrote that note, thanks for reminding me :)

LJF iPhone App Proposal Mock Photos

Loading Screen:
Designed to reflect the cover of the promo newspaper and promo poster images.
What's On?:
This screen contains the entire line-up of the festival broken down by day. The user would be able to find a show, click on it and all the information (show line-up, start time, map, venue info would appear). The user can navigate between days using the calendar selector above the current day list. By clicking on the star to the left of each show the user can save the show to their favourites.

Artists:
This page contains an A-Z list of all 280+ artists playing across London during the festival. A search function at the top of the page and 'Jump To' alphabet down the left allow the user to find an artist quickly and easily. When the user clicks on an artist they will be taken to a specific page containing information about the said artists show(s) during the festival. The artist can be added to the users favourites by taping on the star to the left of the name.

Venues:
This page contains an A-Z list of all 50+ venues used across London for the festival. The user can choose to have the venues listed alphabetically or in distance from their current location, allowing the user to find a venue quickly and easily. When the user clicks on a venue they will be taken to a specific page containing a google map / contact information for the specific venue. Venues can also be added to the favourites by tapping in the star to the left of the venue name.

LJF iPhone App Grids

In the LJF iPhone App I wanted to carry across elements of the newspaper (colours, dotted lines etc) to ensure that they appear from the same range / promo. I wanted to use Futura as I used it throughout the printed parts of the project but on a screen at such a small scale it isn't legible. For this reason I used Helvetica as it is not only a screen safe typeface but it has greater legibility at a low resolution / point size. The area of each artboard is that of an iPhone less the 4mm info bar at the top of the screen.

LJF: iPhone App Icons

Initial icons for my LJF App:
Selected icons reflecting the colours of the promo and newspaper pages:

LJF Venue Info Insert - Adjustments

Post proof changes made to the transport key:
Used heavy sans serif (Futura Std Heavy)for the centre of the key icons so the characters will show up better in print. I also changed the greens used for the icons. Underground: green used in the newpaper, Overground: newspaper green + blue tint and DLR: newspaper green + yellow tint. This change will give the key icons much better definition from one another.

LJF Newspaper Insert Proofs

I decided to print some proofs of my new newspaper inserts. They were only printed on a laser printer so forgive the pants printing. It does however allow me to interact with the design at it's correct scale.
The first thing I noticed is that the black underlines on the cover need to move down by roughly 3mm
The next thing to address id the transport key. There is not enough differentiation between the three greens. Also the type inside the circles is too fine - a weightier sans serif would work much better.
I'm glad to report that the type (smallest: 7pt) is perfectly legible and easy to follow.
The Radio 3 advert card is also fine. No changes for this file.
All that's left to do now is to fix the minor details on the venue document and print them properly at my digital print slot on Monday morning. New final product photos to come. Right now I have an iPhone App to design!

LJF Newspaper Insert: BBC Radio3 Ad Card

The Origninal BBC Radio 3 ad card newspaper for the LJF Newspaper but this time it will be printed in colour rather than black in on red stock.
The reverse of the card contains the Radio 3 programme line-up for November '10 - February '11.
I wanted this to be very clear and compliment the image on the front of the card so I used a simple two column grid with red and black. The horizontal red lines separate the dates / programmes and turn the layout into a modular grid for clarity. The white type reversed out of the black give the information contrast and clarity also.

LJF Newspaper Insert: Venue Info Grids + Booklet

LJF Newspaper Insert: Venue Info - Back Cover

For the back cover I decided to put the 'Serious: Upcoming Events' advert on the back - replacing the red ad card designed earlier in the week.
Separating the ad card I designed last week, I will also design a BBC Radio3 card insert for the newspaper that has the BBC Radio3 advert I designed earlier in the week on one side with their collected broadcast diary on the reverse.

LJF Newspaper Insert: Venue Info - Cover Tests

Cover tests. Wanting the venue info booklet to tie in with the promo I used one of the poster photos on the cover as well as the purple used inside the newspaper.

The wining design - my LJF logo in the same position as the promo posters and promo newspaper to keep continuity. I decided to keep the logo and type white because of it's contrast with the purple. Underlining the title with black references the colour of the logo box and the black line at the bottom of the page gives the composition a solid base.
