Show & Tell / Feedback

Hello. We had our show & tell session this morning. I rather enjoyed it. It made a good change to the normal crit format - the fact we had the entire morning to mooch about looking at peoples work and give feedback was a healthy process. It was good to see the class' work as a whole rather than the select few in your own crit. There are some really interesting and promising things being produced. 


As for my work, I got some good feedback. People preferred my new Daily Mash visual direction, as do I. The addition of the imagery adds interest to the posters through their composition and will do the same to the Spotify and press ads once I re-design them. Comments said that the added imagery brings humour to the composition and the 'haphazard' approach suits the content - much like the punk zines I've been looking at for context.  
The Daily mash scrapbook also went down really well with one person saying 'you avoided letting the story take prominence over the design, well done'. The collaboration work between me and Jonny got some very nice remarks too. This is good because we aim to collaborate for an FMP project.


Possibly the best thing to come from the show & tell were the remarks about my quick turnaround Type Faces brief. Everyone seemed to really like it and thought it was brilliant because it is so simple and 'clever'. Not bad for a small brief I thought up and designed yesterday lunch time! People have suggested that I turn it into a range of notebooks, badges, t-shirts or a game. Maybe even a promotional tool for a type foundry?! 
One of the best comments about the Type Faces brief was that it was an 'Ollie' brief, and to a certain extent I feel I've moved away or lost track on these kind of fun briefs I love to do. My work seems to have become far more serious in the third year, often using photography rather than illustration or creative type. I'm not sure what's happened? Perhaps I thought I had to grow up in the third year? Looking toward FMP I think I'd like to get back to the fun stuff. I will definitely think back to this when writing briefs for FMP. Whoever wrote that note, thanks for reminding me :)

All is Full of Love: Jonny Collab. - Winning Design

The winning design - Jonny and I are agreed that the mix of joined up type and the bold LOVE work well together. We intend to screen print the design as a technical exercise (5 or six colour), probably at Christmas due to our project commitments. The printed posters (A1) will be sold at the Leeds Book Fair in March. We also intend to send prints to prospective studios as promo. We've been discussing it and there is a real possibility that we could set up a collaborative business for our FMP- Jonny: Illustration, me: Type and layout. This could cary on post degree through a website shop to sell the prints and us two sending and developing work over the internet. It could be a good little project whilst we're both working on our separate careers after Uni. More to come on this in the future.

Made the design into a desktop background, my desktop is too busy with files to bother putting up her so I mocked it up. Our website could have free desktop downloads as a way of promotion.

Liking the joined up type more than the separated characters, I decided to go back to the drawing board and draw up some initial sketches to work with.

Initial vector type designed from my sketches. Although I drew it using Jonny's illustration to get the fitting of the type correct it is still a bit of a struggle to get the type to fit correctly.  

These L's are proving to be a bit of a nuisance.

Modifying the L's - this creates the effect of the type looking a bit too funky due to their weight. 

Too curvey.

Changed the I in is so it fits in with the newer rounded type but again its too 'funky'.  

Reduce the size of the L's in the word all so there is more definition between the single words.  

Joined the characters in 'of' together - this helps with the distinction between the words and creates an attractive ligature. After speaking to Jonny, we've decided that this would be a better way to go. I'll go back to paper to draw the type joined up. The word LOVE will stay the same. This way more emphasis will be on LOVE.

As a small collaborative exercise Jonny and I have decided to design a poster. Jonny producing the illustration and me designing the type and layout. Once complete we intend to print a six colour screen print of the design for Leeds Book Fair in March.
